FEATURED ARTIST: LOU PIMENTEL

I recently discovered the works of Lou Pimentel through a sales thread he had on an art message board. I heard of his name before, but never actually looked into his work. I'm so glad I clicked into that sales thread because not only did I get to see some extremely beautiful artwork, but I also got to meet one of the coolest and most down to earth artist in the industry. I haven't talked to Lou in person but the messages we've exchanged just gives me the vibe that he's one really cool cat and his attitude reflects his artwork... You can literally hang some of his pieces in a newborn baby's room. I dig the cherry theme alot, cause in my opinion everything is better with cherries on top. Lou is pretty versatile though, he also has a lot of work aimed at the more mature audience. I recently picked up my first commission from him and plan to pick up more. I'm also going to get some of his work in The Art Gallery, so be on the look out for that... Thanks again Lou!!!

Gallery1988 presents 88POINT5

Gallery1988 is launching a new online division called 88POINT5. It's a new interactive gallery and is set to launch on 10.04.08.

Info taken from Gallery1988:

We are very excited to announce that we are starting an online division of Gallery1988, and it's called 88POINT5. In addition to our gallery shows in LA and SF we will also have monthly online shows at WWW.88POINT5.COM.

In starting this project, we really wanted to focus a lot of attention on the artist. On the site you will see 15-20 new artworks for sale, the artist's bio and direct link to their website, and most important, we're adding a discussion forum. You will be able to communicate directly with the artist, ask them questions, give comments and have discussions.

We're launching 88POINT5 with an incredible artist named Jeannie Lynn Paske! You can check out her website here: http://www.obsoleteworld.com.

Jeannie's show opens on October 4th (very soon!) and future shows (just to name a few) will include Juri Ueda (Nov. 1) and Dan Goodsell (Nov. 29).

We feel that 88POINT5 is a great opportunity for us to really feature and give a lot of attention to emerging artists, while giving collectors a chance to purchase work at reasonable prices.

Random Stuff: The artwork of FERIC

I first learned about Feric from his chase figure in the series 3 Dunny set. The moment I saw his design I knew he was gonna be one of my favorite artists. His style is a blend of meticulous line work and crazy futuristic concepts. Every piece has the appearance of a well thought out blueprint. Feric's work is amazing, and you'll get a better feel of what I'm talking about once you check his site feric.com.

Info taken directly from Feric's site:

Artist Statement :: “fevolution”

At first, I planned to package my works around some glorious theory. Then I thought to myself— “what’s the point of misleading my readers with a lie?“ I then realized it‘d be better to simply be myself and share what lies deep within my heart with everyone.

So, then where should I start?

I have loved drawing and making sketches since I was little. At first I thought I simply liked to draw. Then I realized that it’s not that simple. Drawing is not just a tool to express my creativity; it has become an addiction. Mysteriously, it pulls me into a different space inside my body. I can’t really put my finger on the exact location of that space. It’s somewhere in the left side underneath my heart. I can feel the pulsation of that space almost in sync with my heartbeat. To my astonishment, I met another me in that mysterious space. That “me” is only about five or six years old. He looks like he’s never had a haircut. To be more precise, his whole body is covered with hair. He skips and jumps when he walks. He reminds me of a monkey. Yes, he is just like a wild monkey. As we have to share the same name, we decide that I will use Eric, my first name, and he can use Feng, my last name. Somehow a word with four letters is still too cumbersome for him, so he just asks me to call him F.

Maybe it’s because F has never communicated with the outside world that his logic is entirely different from mine. How should I put it? His logic is totally illogical, and, rebellious. Maybe the only thing we have in common is our shared passion for drawing. Even then, our styles are like night and day. Despite our differences, our time together always brings me indescribable joy as we both enjoy creating art so much.

It’s weird that F never asks me where I come from. It seems that he takes my existence for granted. We never talk about this. I guess he will never know if I don’t tell him about myself. And it doesn’t matter. When F and I are together, we are unfettered by time or space. We inspire each other and communicate with each other through art.

I love drawing. It pushes the door to creativity. But what is it about creating art that fascinates me the most? It’s like doing drugs. Creating art gives me the high (or you could simply say „Creating art makes me high“). On the other hand, it comes with unbearable side effects. After the high comes a feeling of void and emptiness, a realization of how dependent I am on creating art. I guess this is the price I have to pay for my addiction. The more I draw, the more addicted I become. Every time I draw, my judgment and sense of reality are compromised. I can (or „will“ enter a world of imagination and illusion but after I finish drawing, I am thrown back into reality and a deeper sense of pain and emptiness. Yet (somehow), I enjoy this kind of torture as art is an addiction I simply cannot imagine living without.

And how does F look at creating art? I don’t think he feels anything in particular because, to him, that is life.

Around three a.m. a couple of days ago, I was working on some unfinished project in my studio when suddenly somebody tapped me on my left shoulder. I turned and saw F standing there. Before I could ask him how he showed up in my studio, he looked through the window and pointed at the sky, asking me if I felt any waves of pulsation from the dark yonder. F said that it is his heartbeat.

OBEY: Duality of Humanity - Solo Exhibition in S.F.

Taken directly from the Obey Giant site:

SEPTEMBER 13th, 2008
DUALITY OF HUMANITY
- Solo Exhibition

Opening Reception - September 13th, 7-10pm
Exhibition Dates - September 13th - October 4th

White Walls Gallery
835 Larkin Street
San Francisco, CA 94109
For Info please visit http://www.whitewallssf.com/

Over 100 pieces will go on display at White Walls in a timely new show titled “The Duality of Humanity.” The show marks an evolution for the artist, whose unique form of reverse propaganda emerged from the spirit of the punk movement. With this show, Shepard touches upon, but also goes beyond the ‘calls to action’ against mindless consumerism and war evidenced in previous shows like Nineteeneightyfouria, E Pluribus Venom and Imperfect Union. “The difference between this show and the previous ones is that now the optimism of a potential Obama presidency is in the mix,” Shepard said. His recent work reflects his own personal shift towards a new optimism, a direct result of his involvement with, and inspiration by, the powerful political ideals of Barack Obama.

The title of the show, “The Duality of Humanity,” is inspired by the peace-sign wearing US soldier in Vietnam, ‘Joker,’ in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. Fairey sees a strong parallel between the Vietnam war and the Iraq war. Fairey says that this show addresses the “human struggle between good and bad, hope and fear”. One of the show’s central pieces is a child with a gun in his hand and a flower in his hat. The theme of soldiers and weapons bearing peace signs, or peace signs comprised of military effects, runs through many pieces in the show. Environmental themes also appear in some pieces, illustrating the tenuous balance between our dangerously uncontrolled consumption of non-renewable resources, and our well intentioned eco-concerns. Suffering and hope are seamlessly merged in a visual mash-up that defies expectations and easy answers.

“The Duality of Humanity” includes larger mixed media pieces on canvas and paper that have been covered with carefully collaged ephemera, self-printed patterns and found clippings from printed media. The backgrounds provide a seductive painterly texture and visual subtext, often allowing apropos words and images to bleed through the iconic images printed and painted over them. The multiple layers create a sense of depth, but also bring in temporal elements through preserved newsclippings, historic images and vintage printing effects. It is the images in the foreground, however, that give the work its power. They are crisp and provocative, communicating in a way that is direct and clear.

Featured Artist: Bryant "Etom3r" Sina

TIME IS NOW by Bryant "Etom3r" Sina @ Paddy's Coffeehouse
Open now through 09.27.08

I was first put on to Etom3r's work through KR board member Metatron1050, but it didn't take long for me to realize how talented this guy really is. He recently opened his first solo show "TIME IS NOW" @ Paddy's Coffeehouse here in the Bay Area. From what I've seen, this guy is well on his way to becoming a successful artist. Etom3r might be new to the scene, but he's definitely not new to the art and it's culture. I can't really categorize his style because every piece is done differently but in a very creative way. All I can say is, this guy is extremely good at what he does... It's a big plus that Etom3r is out here in San Francisco because it's alot easier for me to get commissions and custom work done... Thanks again for the head's up Meta!!!
